Photographing a Former NFL Quarterback on Isla Mujeres | Carly + Tommy
Every once in a while, a session comes along that feels just a little extra special and photographing former NFL quarterback Tommy Maddox was exactly that kind of experience.
If you’re a football fan, you likely remember his unique career path. From his early years with the Denver Broncos to stints with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants, and then his comeback story with the Pittsburgh Steelers, not to mention his standout MVP season in the XFL. So yes, as someone originally from Denver and a huge Broncos fan, I was more than a little excited when I learned who I was photographing that sunny afternoon!
But what made this session truly memorable wasn’t just who he is, it was how grounded and relaxed the entire experience felt.
Tommy and his wife were vacationing on Isla Mujeres, staying at the beautiful Izla Beach Hotel. I picked them up in my golf cart (which is always part of the fun here on the island).
We headed out to Punta Sur, my favorite place on the island. It was one of those perfect Caribbean afternoons: bright, clear skies, the kind of light photographers dream about, and best of all… we had the cliffs entirely to ourselves.
There’s something about photographing people outside of their usual environment that allows their true personality to come through. Away from stadiums, crowds, and expectations, Tommy was simply present and enjoying time with his wife, soaking in the view, and fully embracing the moment. That’s always the goal in any session, no matter who’s in front of the camera.
We kept things easy and natural, focusing on connection rather than posing. The dramatic coastline gave us a stunning backdrop, but it never overpowered the real story: two people enjoying a beautiful afternoon together. The wind off the water, the sound of waves below, and that endless horizon all came together to create something effortlessly authentic.
As a photographer, sessions like this are a reminder that it’s never just about titles or accomplishments. Whether someone is a professional athlete or simply visiting the island for the first time, what matters most is capturing who they are in that moment.
Of course, I won’t lie, it was pretty surreal photographing a former NFL quarterback, but by the end of the session, what stood out most wasn’t his career highlights it was the genuine, easygoing connection we shared during our time together.
And really, that’s what Isla Mujeres does best. It slows everything down, strips away the noise, and creates space for real moments…the kind that make for the most meaningful photographs.
