Extended Family Photography on Isla Mujeres: Capturing Every Generation Together | Casa de la Playa | The Moffat Family

There’s something incredibly special about photographing an extended family vacation on Isla Mujeres. It’s more than just a photo session, it’s a chance to preserve a moment in time when multiple generations have come together, stepped away from their routines, and are simply enjoying each other.

I met up with the Moffat family at their Isla Mujeres rental villa - Casa de la Playa for their family session. This is a beautiful home and has a large, private beach which makes for the perfect backdrop to our photo shoot.

One of the most meaningful parts of these sessions is capturing the full family together. Grandparents surrounded by their children, grandchildren running in and out of the frame, laughter that feels both chaotic and completely natural. These are the images that often become treasured heirlooms. It’s rare to have everyone in one place, relaxed and present, and that energy comes through beautifully in photos.

But what truly brings depth to an extended family session is going beyond the big group shot. Taking time to photograph each individual family unit allows every branch of the family to have their own story documented. Parents with their kids, siblings together, and even just the couples. These smaller moments often feel more intimate and personal. They’re the images that end up framed in homes, shared in holiday cards, and revisited for years to come.

And then there are the in-between combinations with the cousins laughing together, the kids exploring, the grandparents holding hands, or a quiet moment between siblings who don’t get to see each other often. These are the unscripted moments that bring the whole gallery to life.

Isla Mujeres adds its own magic to the experience. The soft light, the ocean breeze, the relaxed island pace…it all helps everyone feel at ease. There’s no rush, no pressure to pose perfectly. Instead, it becomes about connection, movement, and genuine interaction.

By the end of the session, it never feels like just a photo shoot. It feels like part of the vacation itself and a shared experience filled with laughter, a little bit of chaos, and a lot of love. And the result is a collection of images that tells the full story: not just of a family, but of a time when they were all together in one beautiful place.
