A Surprise Proposal at Punta Sur Isla Mujeres | Ryan & Martha's 12-Year Love Story

Some proposals feel extra meaningful, and Ryan and Martha's surprise engagement at Punta Sur on Isla Mujeres was one of those unforgettable moments.

Not only was May 24 the day Ryan chose to propose, but it also marked their 12th anniversary together. Their story began years ago when they met in high school. While they didn't start dating until later in life, their connection eventually grew into a relationship that has now spanned more than a decade. What better way to celebrate twelve years together than with a surprise marriage proposal overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea?

Ryan and Martha were visiting Isla Mujeres for the very first time as part of an extended trip throughout Mexico. Their stay on the island was short—just one night at the beautiful Ixchel Beach Hotel—but it ended up becoming one of the most memorable stops of their entire journey.

When Ryan contacted me to photograph the proposal, he knew exactly what he wanted. After browsing the proposal galleries on my website, he selected Wave Point at Punta Sur as the perfect location to ask Martha to marry him. With its dramatic cliffs, endless ocean views, and crashing waves, it's one of the most breathtaking proposal locations on Isla Mujeres.

To keep the surprise intact, Ryan wanted me hiking for the proposal so as they walked by me along the sea walk to the proposal spot, I pretended to be a tourist taking photos with my phone. When they arrived at Wave Point, Ryan got down on one knee and asked Martha to spend the rest of her life with him. The emotion, surprise, and joy on Martha's face made for some truly priceless photographs.

After she said "yes," I came out of hiding and introduced myself, and we spent the next hour exploring Punta Sur for their engagement session. The rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, vibrant tropical scenery, and incredible Caribbean views provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate this exciting new chapter in their lives.

One of my favorite things about photographing surprise proposals on Isla Mujeres is getting to witness these once-in-a-lifetime moments. Ryan and Martha's proposal was especially meaningful because it celebrated not only their future together but also the twelve years that led them to this moment.

Although they only spent one night on Isla Mujeres, they absolutely fell in love with the island. Between the stunning beauty of Punta Sur, the relaxed island atmosphere, and the unforgettable memories created during their proposal and engagement session, they left already talking about returning again in the future.

Congratulations, Ryan and Martha! Thank you for allowing me to be part of such an incredible day on Isla Mujeres.
