Punta Sur Family Photography on Isla Mujeres | The Perfect Location for Families with Adult Children | Tom Family

When families visit Isla Mujeres, many immediately think of the beach for their family photos. And while the beaches here are beautiful, the truth is that a beach is a beach—you can find one almost anywhere in the world. If you're looking for something truly unique, something that instantly says Isla Mujeres, there is no location quite like Punta Sur.

Located at the southernmost point of the island, Punta Sur offers dramatic cliffs, turquoise Caribbean waters, rugged coastline, and sweeping ocean views that simply can't be found anywhere else. The combination of natural beauty and breathtaking scenery makes it one of my favorite locations for photographing families, especially families with adult children.

Unlike sessions with young children that focus heavily on play and movement, family sessions with adult children often become an opportunity to capture meaningful relationships and connections that may not have been professionally photographed in years. My approach is to create a complete gallery that tells the story of the entire family while also highlighting the individual relationships within it.

During a typical Punta Sur family session, we begin with photographs of everyone together before moving into a variety of groupings. We capture the immediate family, siblings together, individual couples, parents with each child, and individual portraits as well. These combinations ensure that every family member leaves with photographs that are meaningful to them.

For this particular session, the family chose to extend their photography coverage so we could stay through sunset at Punta Sur. This is one of my favorite additions to any session. As the sun begins to drop lower in the sky, the light softens beautifully and creates a warm, golden glow across the cliffs and coastline. The changing colors of the sky combined with the dramatic ocean backdrop create some of the most stunning images of the entire session.

One of the things I love most about Punta Sur is its variety. Within a short walk, we can photograph against dramatic cliffs, winding pathways, rocky shorelines, and endless ocean views. The result is a gallery with incredible diversity while still maintaining a cohesive look and feel.
