Romantic Surprise Marriage Proposal & Engagement Session on Isla Mujeres | Johnathan + Dee
There’s something incredibly special about photographing a surprise marriage proposal — especially when it involves two people as joyful and connected as Johnathan and Dee. Traveling all the way from London, this was their very first time visiting Isla Mujeres and the final stop of an extended adventure throughout Mexico together.
Johnathan carefully planned every detail for the proposal, choosing the stunning Lookout Balcony at Punta Sur for the moment he would ask Dee to marry him. With sweeping ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and the Caribbean stretching endlessly behind them, it could not have been a more perfect setting. As the waves crashed below and the sea breeze moved through the palms, Johnathan got down on one knee — and Dee said yes.
As an Isla Mujeres proposal photographer, moments like these are always incredibly meaningful to document — especially when couples are experiencing the island for the very first time.
After the big “I DO,” we wandered around the cliffs and seaside walkways capturing their engagement session around Punta Sur. The entire session felt effortless and full of energy as they laughed, embraced, and danced Bachata together almost the entire time. It was such a beautiful reflection of how they first met two years ago — dancing Bachata together back home.
But the surprises for Dee weren’t over yet.
We hopped into my golf cart and made our way to Playa Norte where another romantic setup was waiting — a cozy blanket decorated with rose petals and a bottle of chilled champagne right on the beach. As the sun slowly dipped toward the horizon, they toasted to their engagement, danced barefoot in the sand, and soaked in one of their final evenings in Mexico together.
From the emotional proposal to the sunset beach session, every moment of this experience felt relaxed, romantic, and genuinely full of love. Photographing destination couples on Isla Mujeres and helping create unforgettable proposal experiences like this is truly one of my favorite parts of what I do.
