Rachel & Dayton’s Pre-Ceremony Couple’s Session at Punta Sur | Isla Mujeres

Most people picture calm turquoise water and endless sunshine when they think about wedding photography in Mexico. But some of the most unforgettable sessions happen when Isla Mujeres surprises us with dramatic weather, textured skies, and a moodier side of the Caribbean. Rachel and Dayton’s pre-wedding couple’s session at Punta Sur brought exactly that energy — storm clouds rolling in, wind off the ocean, and an atmosphere that felt raw, emotional, and incredibly cinematic.

Before heading to their intimate private beach wedding ceremony later that day coordinated with Isla Mujeres Elopements, we spent time exploring Punta Sur, located on the southern edge of Isla Mujeres. Known for its rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, and panoramic Caribbean views, Punta Sur offers a completely different feel than the softer beach settings many couples imagine for destination wedding photography in Cancun or Riviera Maya. It’s wild, textured, and visually striking — one of my absolute favorite places on the island for couples wanting something unique and editorial-inspired.

As we walked along the cliffs, dark clouds slowly moved across the horizon, adding depth and intensity to the sky. The contrast between the moody weather and the vibrant Caribbean blues created such an incredible backdrop for photos. Sessions like this always remind me why I love photographing couples on Isla Mujeres so much — the island constantly changes depending on the light, weather, and energy of the day.

Punta Sur is such an amazing addition to an Isla Mujeres wedding day because it allows couples to experience another side of the island while creating photographs that feel adventurous, emotional, and completely different from traditional beach wedding portraits. Whether the skies are soft and golden or dark and dramatic like they were for Rachel and Dayton, the location always creates something unforgettable.

After their session, we made our way to their secluded private beach ceremony location where they would exchange vows later that afternoon surrounded by the peaceful beauty of Isla Mujeres.
