Playful Sunrise Family Photo Session on Isla Mujeres with Young Children | Isla Mujeres Family Photographer
There’s something incredibly special about photographing families who call Isla Mujeres home. Unlike visitors rushing through a vacation schedule, local families already know the slower rhythm of the island, and that relaxed energy naturally flows into their photo sessions. This beautiful sunrise family session was the perfect example of that.
We met about an hour after sunrise, one of my favorite times to photograph families with young children — especially little boys who love to move, explore, and experience the world around them. Early mornings on Isla Mujeres are peaceful and almost magical. The shops were still closed, the streets were quiet, and most tourists were still asleep, giving us the colorful streets and beach almost entirely to ourselves.
We began our session in front of one of the oldest buildings on the island, filled with rich texture, weathered charm, and vibrant colors that photograph beautifully. From there, we wandered slowly through town, stopping at one of Isla Mujeres’ colorful murals before eventually making our way toward the beach.
One thing I always explain to parents is that photographing small children — especially energetic boys — is rarely about asking them to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera. The best family photographs happen when children are allowed the freedom to warm up naturally. That’s why I almost always recommend a full session rather than a short mini session. Many parents initially worry their children “won’t last that long,” but in reality, the extra time allows kids to become comfortable, curious, playful, and fully themselves.
At the beginning of this session, the little ones were a bit shy and cautious, which is completely normal. Rather than forcing poses or rushing moments, I let them explore. We played, wandered, laughed, and simply followed their energy. Slowly, their personalities began to shine. By the time we reached the beach, they were smiling, playful, adventurous, and completely immersed in the experience.
My approach to family photography on Isla Mujeres is always centered around connection, movement, patience, and allowing children space to simply be kids. Those authentic little moments — sandy feet, curious expressions, tight hugs, silly laughter, and spontaneous play — are often the memories families treasure most years later.
If you live on Isla Mujeres or are visiting with young children, sunrise family photo sessions offer such a beautiful and relaxed way to capture your family exactly as you are in this season of life.
