Punta Sur Family Vacation Photos on Isla Mujeres | Arkfeld Family Session from Playa Mujeres to Isla Mujeres

When families vacation together in Mexico, it’s often one of the rare times everyone is in the same place at the same time — especially once children are grown and building lives of their own. That’s exactly what made the Arkfeld family’s photo session on Isla Mujeres so special. While staying at the beautiful Atelier Playa Mujeres, they decided to take a short trip over to Isla Mujeres for a late afternoon family photography session at Punta Sur with their adult children and significant others.

One of the things visitors love most about Isla Mujeres is how easy it is to get to from Cancun and Playa Mujeres. From the mainland, it’s simply a quick drive to the ferry terminal followed by a 20-minute ferry ride across the turquoise Caribbean waters. Many families staying in Cancun, Costa Mujeres, or Playa Mujeres choose to visit Isla Mujeres for the day because it feels completely different from the resort experience — more relaxed, authentic, scenic, and intimate.

For the Arkfeld family, Punta Sur was the perfect choice for their vacation photos. Located on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, Punta Sur offers some of the most dramatic scenery in the Riviera Maya region. Instead of crowded beaches and resort backdrops, the area features rugged cliffs, winding seawalks, crashing waves, volcanic rock formations, and sweeping ocean views that create an incredibly unique setting for family portraits.

Photographing families with adult children is always a little different than photographing young families, and I love that dynamic. Sessions naturally flow between full family portraits, the original family unit, siblings together, couples photos, and individual portraits. The Arkfeld family wanted a combination of natural interactions and timeless portraits that truly reflected this season of life together.

As the late afternoon light softened over Punta Sur, we explored different areas of the cliffs and pathways, stopping at scenic overlooks while creating images that felt relaxed, connected, and genuine. One of my favorite things about photographing families on Isla Mujeres is how the island encourages everyone to slow down, enjoy the experience, and simply be together.
