The Cluff Family | Isla Mujeres Family Photo Session with Adult Children
There’s something incredibly meaningful about photographing families during this stage of life — when children are grown, building lives of their own, bringing significant others into the family, and everyone is together again in one beautiful place. Family vacations on Isla Mujeres often become one of the rare opportunities for adult children and parents to slow down, reconnect, and create lasting memories together, which makes sessions like these especially valuable.
This recent family photo session on Isla Mujeres included the parents, their three adult children, and one soon-to-be fiancé during their vacation on the island. What I loved most about this session was their desire for timeless, classic family portraits that felt natural, polished, and meaningful. Every family is unique in the style of images they are drawn to. Some families love lots of movement and candid interaction, while others prefer a more traditional portrait approach focused on connection, closeness, and beautifully composed images together. This session leaned beautifully into that classic style.
Photographing families with adult children brings such a unique dynamic to sessions like these. At this stage of life, these photographs often become even more important because families change and grow so quickly. Engagements, weddings, careers, and busy schedules can make it increasingly rare for everyone to be together in one place. During this session, we created a wonderful variety of portraits including the entire family together, the parents with their children, sibling portraits, couples photos, individual portraits, and special images incorporating the soon-to-be fiancé as part of the family story.
For this session, we chose one of my favorite more secluded beach locations on Isla Mujeres, away from the busier tourist beaches and crowded areas. What makes this location so special is the incredible combination of scenery all in one setting. Along with the soft sandy beach and turquoise Caribbean water, the area also features volcanic rock formations, swaying palms, and waves crashing against the shoreline. It offers a bit of that rugged coastal feel while still maintaining the warmth and softness of a beautiful beach environment.
We began the session about an hour and a half before sunset to take advantage of the soft late afternoon light. This time of day creates beautiful tones, flattering light, and a calm atmosphere that photographs so well. As the evening approached, the beach became even quieter, giving the family a peaceful and private experience together.
Sessions like these become so much more than simply taking photos during vacation. They preserve a season of life — one where everyone is together, connected, and creating memories that will only become more meaningful with time.
