Family Vacation Photos and Secret Marriage Proposal on Isla Mujeres | Brad & Mika’s Engagement Session at Punta Sur

There’s something incredibly special about a family vacation that turns into a surprise engagement story — and that’s exactly what happened for Brad and Mika during their trip to Mexico. What started as a beautiful family photo session on Isla Mujeres quickly became one of the most emotional and joyful proposal moments I’ve photographed.

Mika’s mom originally contacted me while the family was planning their vacation to Cancun. The idea was to organize a family photo session while everyone was together in paradise, but there was also a secret surprise in the works — Brad planned to propose to Mika during the session. Family proposal sessions like this are always so meaningful because the people who matter most get to witness the moment unfold in real time.

One of the things visitors love most about adding an Isla Mujeres photo session to their Cancun vacation is how easy it is to get here. The island is just a quick and scenic 20-minute ferry ride from Cancun, making it the perfect day trip for engagement photos, proposals, family portraits, and unforgettable memories away from the larger resort crowds.

We began the session with a few quick family group photos around the dramatic cliffs and ocean views of Punta Sur. Everyone was smiling, excited, and quietly anticipating what was about to happen. Once we finished, we casually made our way over to Wave Point — the exact location Brad had secretly selected for the proposal.

I told the group, “Let’s do some couple’s photos now,” which Brad knew was his cue and said “we will go first”. I positioned them exactly where we had planned while the rest of the family hung back nearby with a perfect vantage point to watch everything unfold.

Before Mika even turned around, she could already sense something was happening. The second she realized Brad was down on one knee, her expression completely changed. Pure shock, excitement, emotion, and joy all at once. Those are the moments photographers live for. The family was behind me snapping photos on their phones, laughing and crying as they witnessed such a beautiful moment together.

After the big “YES,” Brad and Mika immediately ran into the arms of their family for hugs, happy tears, and celebration. The energy afterward was incredible — joyful, emotional, and filled with so much love. We continued photographing the entire family and their engagement session intertwined around the cliffs, pathways, and stunning ocean views of Punta Sur.

Proposal sessions like this are such a reminder that the best moments are often the ones shared with the people you love most.
