Wind, Laughter and Island Colors: A Day with a Vacationing Family on Isla Mujeres
Photographing families on vacation is always such a treat—there’s something so joyful about capturing people while they’re in that relaxed, “out of office” state of mind. This particular session on Isla Mujeres was no exception. I met up with a lovely family who had traveled to the island for a much-needed getaway, and we spent a breezy, laughter-filled afternoon exploring some of the most scenic spots the island has to offer.
We kicked off the session at Half Moon Beach, one of my favorite little coves on the island. It was definitely a windy day—those classic Caribbean gusts were in full force—but the family embraced it completely. Hair was flying, but so were spirits. There’s something incredibly candid and freeing about photographing people in the wind. The movement brings an organic energy to the images, and it felt like nature was playing right along with us.
After soaking up the salty breeze and catching some beautiful, windswept portraits by the ocean, we made our way into the heart of Isla Mujeres. Walking through the historic center of town, we stopped at vibrant murals, colorful colonial buildings, and old island homes with beautifully weathered textures. The town is a photographer’s dream—every corner seems to hold a new burst of color or detail that tells a story.
We wrapped up the session on the opposite side of the island, near the wooden piers and historic fishing boats. The golden hour light was just beginning to dip, casting a warm glow over the weathered boats and calm water. It was such a peaceful, picturesque way to end our time together. The contrast of old fishing traditions alongside this modern, vibrant family felt like a beautiful tribute to the island’s past and present.
Throughout the entire shoot, despite the gusty wind and ever-changing backdrop, what stood out most was the family’s connection and joy. They laughed, explored, and genuinely enjoyed being in the moment together. And to me, that’s what family sessions are really about—not perfectly posed photos, but memories captured in the middle of real life.
Isla Mujeres never fails to inspire, and this session reminded me exactly why I love what I do. Photographing a family’s adventure in a place as magical as this is an honor—and I’m so glad I got to be a small part of their vacation story.
