I’ve been photographing couples professionally since 2005 and have captured hundreds of proposals and engagement sessions here on Isla Mujeres, where I live. Every collection includes pre-session planning assistance and detailed logistical guidance so you never feel like you’re trying to figure things out on your own.
Many of my clients have never been to Isla Mujeres before and are often staying in Cancun prior to the proposal, so I help walk you through all of the details ahead of time. This includes guidance on transportation, ferry timing, what time to leave your hotel, how to get to your proposal location, and how the overall flow of the experience will unfold.
My goal is to make the process feel smooth and stress-free so you can focus less on logistics and more on being fully present during one of the biggest moments of your lives together.
Timing of Your Session
To take advantage of the best light of the day, my sessions typically take place later in the afternoon — generally beginning about two hours before sunset.
This timing allows for softer, more flattering light, cooler temperatures, and a more romantic atmosphere while also giving us enough time to capture both the proposal itself and your engagement session afterward without feeling rushed.
For collections that include sunset photos, we’ll continue photographing through golden hour and into sunset itself.
Why I Primarily Photograph Proposals at Punta Sur
Over the years, I’ve found that Punta Sur consistently offers the most unique, emotional, and visually striking experience for marriage proposals on Isla Mujeres.
While beaches are beautiful, a beach can honestly feel somewhat similar no matter where you are in the Caribbean. Punta Sur, on the other hand, feels distinctly and unmistakably Isla Mujeres. The dramatic cliffs, rugged rock formations, turquoise water, and sweeping ocean views create an atmosphere that feels adventurous, intimate, and truly unforgettable.
It also offers much more visual variety for your engagement session afterward. Within a relatively small area, we’re able to create imagery that feels dramatic, romantic, cinematic, and diverse without needing to travel all over the island.
Another reason I love Punta Sur is that it generally feels more intentional and private compared to many beach areas, which can often be busy with tourists, beach clubs, vendors, and distractions.

Wave Point
Wave Point is the most dramatic and adventurous proposal location at Punta Sur. Nestled between the rocky cliffs and ocean below, this spot offers an incredibly cinematic setting with textured stone, turquoise water, and waves that often surge dramatically against the rocks nearby.
Because of its lower position near the water, the scenery feels immersive and powerful, creating imagery that is emotional, unique, and full of movement and energy. Depending on the ocean conditions that day, the waves can occasionally create spectacular sprays of water that make the moment feel even more unforgettable.
This location is perfect for couples wanting a proposal setting that feels bold, intimate, and unlike anywhere else on Isla Mujeres.
Rocky Point
Rocky Point offers a dramatic yet intimate setting tucked among the natural rock formations of Punta Sur. Surrounded by textured cliffs, turquoise water, and sweeping ocean views, this location feels adventurous while still offering a sense of privacy and connection.
The layered rock formations create beautiful depth and dimension in photographs, while the lower position near the water allows the ocean to feel incredibly close and immersive. The soft curves and textures of the stone also create a naturally romantic setting that photographs beautifully in the late afternoon light.

Lookout Balcony
The Lookout Balcony offers some of the most expansive ocean views at Punta Sur. Perched along the cliffs above the turquoise Caribbean water, this location feels open, scenic, and incredibly dramatic while still maintaining a sense of intimacy for the two of you.
The elevated viewpoint creates stunning imagery with the ocean stretching endlessly behind you, while the curved stone balcony naturally draws attention to the moment itself. It’s especially beautiful for couples wanting breathtaking cliffside views without navigating down into the lower rocky areas.

Option One | Hidden Photographer
I’ll be off in the distance photographing your proposal as it naturally unfolds. After the big “YES!”, I’ll come over, introduce myself, and we’ll continue into your engagement session together.
Option Two | The “Chance Encounter”
This is my preferred option. I’ll casually approach you at a designated location and explain that I’m a professional photographer from Colorado building my portfolio in Mexico and ask if you’d be open to a complimentary mini session.
This approach allows me to naturally guide and position you both in the best lighting and scenery before the proposal happens, all while keeping your partner completely unaware of what’s about to happen.
Option Three | Planned Couple’s Session
You tell your partner that you hired me for a couple’s photo session while visiting Isla Mujeres and then surprise them with the proposal during the shoot itself.
While still a surprise, they may have a slight feeling it could happen if professional photos aren’t something you typically do together.

Add additional time for sunset coverage to this collection $75 USD.
Rush Order Request — $100 USD
Normally, your edited gallery is delivered within two to three weeks; however, if you’re excited to receive your images sooner, rush delivery is available and your gallery can be delivered within 3–4 days of your session.
Transportation & Additional Expenses
You are responsible for your own transportation to the proposal location; however, I’m happy to assist with transportation recommendations and arrangements on the island.
Punta Sur requires a small entrance fee payable directly to the park (120 pesos /$8 USD per person).
Transportation in my golf cart after your session back to the ferry terminal or another destination on the island is included.

We’ve never been to Isla Mujeres before. Is that a problem?
Not at all! Many of my clients are visiting Isla Mujeres for the very first time and are often staying in Cancun prior to the proposal. I’ll guide you through all of the logistics beforehand including transportation, ferry timing, where to go, and how everything will unfold so the experience feels smooth and stress-free.
Where exactly is Punta Sur?
Punta Sur is located on the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres and is known for its dramatic cliffs, rocky coastline, turquoise Caribbean water, and sweeping ocean views. It’s one of the most scenic and unique locations anywhere on the island and my favorite place for proposals and engagement sessions.
What time do sessions usually take place?
Most sessions begin about two hours before sunset. This allows us to take advantage of the softer light later in the day while also giving enough time to comfortably photograph both the proposal itself and your engagement session afterward.
How does the surprise proposal actually work?
There are several different ways we can approach the proposal depending on how much of a surprise you want it to be. Some clients prefer that I photograph discreetly from a distance, while others prefer my “chance encounter” approach where I casually approach you as a photographer offering a complimentary mini session. We’ll discuss which option feels best during our consultation.
What should we wear?
Neutral tones and softer colors tend to photograph beautifully against the natural textures and turquoise water of Punta Sur. I generally recommend avoiding overly busy patterns or matching outfits. Once booked, I’m happy to help guide you with wardrobe suggestions as well.
Is Punta Sur difficult to walk around?
Some areas of Punta Sur do involve stairs, rocky walkways, and uneven terrain. Most couples do perfectly fine, but good mobility is recommended.
What happens if it rains?
If the weather looks questionable, we’ll stay in close communication leading up to the session. Isla weather can change quickly and often passes through fast. In situations where conditions truly aren’t workable, we’ll discuss alternative timing options whenever possible.
How long does it take to receive our photos?
Your final edited gallery is typically delivered within two to three weeks. Rush delivery is also available if you’d like your images sooner.
Do we receive the digital files?
Absolutely. All edited images are delivered in high resolution via digital download and also included in a personalized online gallery that makes it easy to view, download, and share your images with family and friends.
Can you recommend restaurants or places to celebrate afterward?
Definitely! Isla Mujeres has some wonderful restaurants and romantic spots to continue celebrating after your proposal. I’m always happy to offer recommendations depending on the type of evening you’re envisioning.
