A Multigenerational Family Portrait Session on Isla Mujeres | The Wallace Family
There is something truly special about photographing families while they are on vacation—everyone is relaxed, connected, and fully present. That was especially true during the Wallace family’s multigenerational family portrait session on Isla Mujeres, Mexico, where sun, sea, and celebration came together for an unforgettable afternoon.
The Wallace family was visiting Isla Mujeres to celebrate a meaningful milestone: the grandparents’ anniversary. With their adult children and grandchildren all together in one place, it was the perfect opportunity to document not just how their family looks, but how it feels to be together in this season of life. As a family portrait photographer, these are the sessions I love most—full of laughter, movement, and genuine connection.
We began the session in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and flattering, starting near the family’s accommodations at NautiBeach Condos. Isla Mujeres is known for its charm and color, and we took advantage of a vibrant, colorful building nearby to kick things off. This location added a fun, playful energy to the first part of the session and gave us a beautiful contrast to the neutral tones of the beach portraits that followed.
From there, we made our way to a secluded stretch of beach, where the session really came to life. The grandparents spent time laughing and playing with their grandkids—walking hand in hand along the shoreline, sharing hugs, and enjoying unscripted moments that turned into some of the most meaningful images of the day. These candid interactions are what make Isla Mujeres family photography so powerful: barefoot kids in the sand, grandparents soaking in every moment, and cousins running together as the sun dipped lower in the sky.
I captured a variety of family groupings, including the full extended family, individual families, siblings, cousins, and special moments between the grandparents and each grandchild. Photographing cousins together is always a highlight—there’s a unique bond there that shines through naturally when kids are given the space to simply be themselves.
As the session wrapped up, the golden light reflecting off the Caribbean Sea created the perfect backdrop for timeless beach family portraits in Mexico. The combination of meaningful celebration, a stunning location, and genuine connection made this session one to remember.
If you’re planning a trip to Isla Mujeres, whether for an anniversary, family reunion, or vacation, I would love to help you preserve these fleeting moments. Family portraits taken while traveling become treasured heirlooms, reminding you not just where you were, but who you were together at that time.
Because years from now, these images won’t just show a beautiful beach—they’ll tell the story of family, love, and a celebration worth remembering.
