Isla Mujeres Proposal and Engagement Session at Punta Sur | Travis + Alexis

I don’t think there is a time in your life that is more important and exciting as when you get engaged. I’ve been photographing destination proposals on Isla Mujeres for many, many years but each one still makes me get goosebumps. There really are no words to describe this special moment in a couple’s life and I am so grateful and honored to be there to capture and preserve this memory for them.

Now let me tell you the wonderful story of how Travis and Alexis got engaged on Isla Mujeres!

When Travis and Alexis were invited to a wedding in Akumal in early 2024, he immediately started to devise a plan to propose to her on the trip. Alexis is very close to her grandma, who is from Mexico, so the ideal of proposing to her in Mexico was important to Travis.

After many hours in an internet rabbit hole, Travis knew that Isla Mujeres was the perfect destination to pop the question. To make this happen, he changed their arrival date so they could come to the island first and booked their stay at the new all-inclusive on the island - Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets.

Travis reached out to me at the beginning of October and we chatted and hatched a plan. When I asked him a later about the day, he said; “What really sealed the deal was you Susan. I had searched everywhere for a photogapher who would act along in the plan, not just pop out of a bush during the proposal. It really did put the perfect final touches on getting a pure reaction from Alexis. It went exactly as I pictured it in my head and I’m so happy that I was able to find you. Thanks for all that you did.” When I read this, it brought tears to my eyes!

The day of the proposal, the skies were threatening rain and looked very ominous, but that didn’t stop us. Our plan was a success and Alexis didn’t see it coming when Travis got down on one knee. What a moment! What magic! I kept snapping images, capturing the excitement and joy.

After some time, I joined the couple and congratulated them on their engagement and explained to Alexis that Travis had planned for me to be there and capture the special moment. She was thrilled! I then shared that we were going to now do their engagement photos!

We walked around the cliffs taking photos and they shared their love story with me. I kept an eye on the sky and the distant rain storm that progressively got closer but didn’t hit us, luckily, until our photo session was done including capturing some fabulous ‘sunset’ photos with the stormy sky instead of the ball of sun. We all got wet walking back to our golf carts, but no one minded because Travis and Alexis are engaged!
