Surprise Proposal and Engagement at Punta Sur, Isla Mujeres | Derek + Haneen

I love the story about how Derek proposed to Haneen. It started with Haneen contacting me to do a normal couple’s session. She shared that this would be their first professional photos as a couple. She wanted a natural setting and decided a secluded beach spot would be perfect.

A week or so after the session was booked, I received an email from Derek, Haneen’s boyfriend saying he wanted to propose during the session. He had a custom ring made and didn’t think it would be ready for their trip to Mexico, but it was! I shared that, in my opinion, the best spot for a proposal was at Punta Sur. Derek loved the idea. Derek somehow convinced Haneen to expand their session to also include Punta Sur without giving away the surprise!

As I always do, I was tracking the weather forecast and a big named tropical storm (Sara) was headed our way. I contacted Haneen about the possibility of moving our session to a few days earlier to be on the safe side which worked both for their time on the island and my schedule.

I picked them up in my golf cart from their accommodations at Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets and we headed to Punta Sur. We made our way first to the spot Derek choose for the big question. It was such a special moment and I was thrilled to be there to capture this incredible moment for them!

When I asked Derek if he was nervous before he proposed, he said not at all! He knew for a long time that this was the woman he was going to marry and that he was so thrilled to take the next step with the love of his life!

I asked Haneen how she felt right after the proposal and she said “On cloud 9! I couldn’t stop smiling! It was one of the happiest moments of my life. And the fact that it was captured on camera is amazing. Friends and family have said they've never seen my smile so big. It felt like a dream, I had to ask Derek to pinch me weeks after in case I was dreaming haha.”

After the proposal and engagement photos at Punta Sur, we jumped back in my golf cart and headed to a secluded beach location where another surprise awaited Haneen - a bottle of champagne by the sea to continue their celebration!

It was a magical day for an incredible couple. Congratulations Haneen and Derek! I’m so happy you found each other!
